THE STORY:
“Ouroboros” means “he that eats his own tail” in Ancient Greek, and was depicted in mythology as a serpent doing just that. It symbolizes infinity, never-ending creation and destruction.
The Ouroboros is a continuation of “Appetite”, a René Magritte-inspired artwork taken to another level of Peardom. In the piece “Appetite”, I introduced a concept that is designed to carry on for many years. A world gone pear-shaped while poking the fun at individual issues. These particular surrealistic pears are on a journey through the world, while eating all of the apples along the way.
In many ways it is a simple message to the world that we need to stop eating all of the apples, otherwise there will be none left….. but if we want to delve deeper into this concept, the Ouroboros has a far greater meaning. Ouroboros is often used to symbolize introspection, the eternal return or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself. It also represents the infinite cycle of nature's endless creation and destruction, life and death and despair. Now knowing this, the mind can pursue this concept in many directions. My goal is for each individual Surrealism lover to have their own journey through the piece. It is a positive message, but that is for you to discover on your own.
